LOOKING BACK AT LAST WEEK
RELIGION – In Lesson 6 we learned that grace is the gift of God’s life that he share with us. We learned that grace helps us to act as images of God and make it possible for us to live forever with God in heaven.
MATH – We began Chapter 4, “Subtraction Facts to 10”. We learned different strategies, such as the take-away concept, number bonds, counting on, and counting back to identify and learn subtraction facts.
LANGUAGE ARTS – In Unit 2, Lesson 3 we isolated sounds in words and generated words that contain the sound of j, spelled dje. We also learned to blend, spell and read words that contain the u and z sounds. Our Read Aloud stories this week were No Wolves Allowed by Sheila Sweeny and Far Away Friends by Tamara Andrews. Reading skills that we worked on included: making and confirming predictions, main idea and details. We learned about action verbs and helping verbs. We learned that action verbs tell us what action is performed by the person or thing named in the sentence, and that sometimes action verbs need help from other verbs to show when the action happens. These verbs are called helping verbs. We read decodable books 29-33 and they went home daily. I hope they continue to read them to you at home!
SCIENCE – We continue to study the lifecycle of plants and enjoyed our Plants 101 science experiment at the Botanic Gardens science lab last week!
OTHER NEWS and NOTES
SCHOOL CLOSURES: Just a reminder that we do NOT do delayed starts on snowy mornings. It is always your decision to remain at home on inclement weather days. Please watch your TV’s in the am for closures. An IC blast will also be sent.
HALLOWEEN PARTY: Our Halloween Party will be held on Wednesday, October 31 from 2:15-3:00. Thank you to our room moms and all the volunteers helping out to make this a fun time for the children. We will also have a Halloween Parade and the children CAN wear their costumes for the parade and party! They will have time to change into their costumes after lunch. Please make sure they are able to change into the costume by themselves. Please note that no masks are allowed and no witch or devil costumes.
VETERANS DAY: This year, STM would like to honor the Veterans in our lives with a video. Please email ONE picture of any and all Veterans in your family to Rachel Espinosa (firstname.lastname@example.org). We would like to include as many branches as we can including: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, Reserves and National Guard. Please only send US Vets. All pictures must be submitted by November 2nd, 2018.
SPELLING WORDS: For this week’s spelling words, please go to VocabularySpellingCity.com. I hope your child is enjoying this site while learning their spelling words at the same time!
HOODIES: Please double check to make sure the hoodie your child brought home really belongs to them. We have a few that are lost.
SNACKS AND LUNCHES: Please make sure you are sending enough food for your children. Several students just today complained of not having enough and still being hungry. They could be going through a growing spurt!
